His most famous Canadian collaborations are with Richard Terfry (better known as Buck 65), Dallas Green of City and Colour and Alexisonfire, the Sadies and Fucked Up. In addition to his solo works, Downie collaborated with several fellow Canadian and international artists. Downie performing in 2013 Collaborations Both it and Battle of the Nudes are credited as Gord Downie and the Country of Miracles. His third solo effort, The Grand Bounce, was released in 2010. He released his second solo album, Battle of the Nudes, in 2003 before returning to the studio with the Tragically Hip. The backing musicians, credited as the Goddamned Band, consisted of indie rock band the Dinner Is Ruined, Josh Finlayson of Skydiggers and singer-songwriter Julie Doiron. He published his first poetry and prose collection alongside the album and under the same title. ĭownie began pursuing a solo career with the release of Coke Machine Glow in 2001. The Tragically Hip quickly became famous once MCA Records president Bruce Dickinson saw them performing at the Horseshoe Tavern in Toronto and offered them a record deal. In an interview with Canadian music journalist Steve Newton, Downie noted that the Tragically Hip's early setlist was originally drawn to bands such as The Yardbirds and The Stones, a decision that was made because the Hip wished other Kingston bar bands would also play the genre. Originally, the band covered popular British rock songs from the 1960s. In 1986, Manning left the band as guitarist-vocalist Paul Langlois joined. In 1984, at age 20, Downie formed the Tragically Hip with Rodents's members Rob Baker and Gord Sinclair, another younger Kingston Collegiate and Vocational Institute alumnus, Johnny Fay, and saxophonist Davis Manning. After graduating from high school, Downie attended Queen's University where he majored in film studies, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts and Science in 1986. In high school, Downie was the frontman for a band called the Slinks performing at the KCVI Variety show and rivaling older members Rob Baker and Gord Sinclair's band the Rodents. In Kingston, Downie attended the downtown high school Kingston Collegiate and Vocational Institute, where other members of the Tragically Hip also attended. He was the son of Lorna (Neal) and Edgar Charles Downie, a travelling salesman, later a real estate broker and developer. Gordon Edgar Downie was born in Amherstview, Ontario, and raised in Kingston, Ontario, along with his brothers Mike and Patrick, and sisters Charlyn and Paula. His family and managers said future releases are planned, including solo material and unreleased work with the Hip. His first to hit number one was Introduce Yerself, shortly after his death. ĭownie released eight solo albums, three posthumously: Coke Machine Glow (2001), Battle of the Nudes (2003), The Grand Bounce (2010), And the Conquering Sun (2014), Secret Path (2016), Introduce Yerself (2017), Away Is Mine (2020) and Lustre Parfait (2023). He is revered by many as an inspiring and influential artist in Canada's music history. He was the singer and lyricist for the Canadian rock band The Tragically Hip, which he fronted from its formation in 1984 until his death in 2017. Gordon Edgar Downie CM (Febru– October 17, 2017) was a Canadian rock singer-songwriter, musician, writer and activist. In a Vice interview from 2014, LSD blotter art collector Mark McCloud talks about the shift in the artistic vision: A Generation of Artistsīy the 1970s, LSD blotter art was not only a way to brand a particular manufacturer’s drug, but it was also an interesting new medium for artists. It influenced our internal and external worlds, inspiring and leaving behind a new era of artistic expression. Thompson, Jimi Hendrix and Aldous Huxley, taking acid was a gateway to another way of viewing environments and processing what it means to be human. During this decade, Timothy Leary-famed psychologist, writer, and psychedelic advocate-coined the catchphrase, “Turn on, tune it, drop out.”įrom The Beatles to Hunter S. It left a significant impression on the ‘60s and onward, though that decade’s generation was especially outspoken about dropping acid. The influence LSD has had on Western culture is undeniable. Using blotter paper as a delivery mechanism for LSD opened up a whole new world for branded drugs, served in style. In addition, at the time it was also a way to know that the drugs were legitimate and not a fake product. It allowed chemists to create easily identifiable drugs. But nothing was as personalized and captivating as LSD blotter art. Sure, chemists could use different sizes and colors of capsules to distinguish their products. This made for an almost secret society of psychonauts looking to expand their consciousness. Whether intended to be ingested or simply collected, blotter sheets branded drugs. This new medium of blotter art brought a particular beauty to drug use. Consider that a one-gram sugar cube may only contain one hit of LSD, and a one-gram crystal of LSD was equal to 10,000 doses! This made the use of blotter that much more appealing since it was a lightweight and discreet method of transporting and distributing acid. For example, the same mandatory minimum sentence applied for one gram of LSD crystal and one gram sugar cube containing LSD. Legally speaking, the laws were not reasonably representative of the substance and its form factor. This is how LSD doses are measured: one square = one hit. Later, the sheets were perforated into even smaller squares, typically 100 per sheet. The square sheets of blotter paper were soaked in LSD, and the paper absorbed and dried quickly. This was the perfect mechanism for transporting LSD. It was deemed inadequate for writing but was excellent for absorbing extra ink or liquid. In order to safely hide the drug, chemists popularized the method of using a “blotter.” Blotting paper is a highly absorbent paper whose invention was accidental, much like LSD. What Is a Blotter?Īfter becoming illegal, LSD continued to be distributed through underground channels. And its presentation was as unique as the users themselves, inspired by a generation of artists. As the hallmark drug of the ’60, LSD was the perfect accoutrement for all hippies and beatniks, psychonauts and explorers. It was the way LSD looked that also changed the experience in a way. The method of transportation and consumption wasn’t the only creative element. It wasn’t just a drug-it was an entire, often inexplicable experience. But in an era amplified by hippie culture, flower power and freedom of expression, the creation of LSD blotter art solidified the cultural significance of this potent psychedelic. Originally, LSD was packaged into pills, or the liquid was dropped onto sugar cubes. Instead, people were finding creative ways to consume this psychedelic drug. Many other states and countries soon followed suit. government first banned the use of LSD in California in 1966. And what is more fashionable than a mind-altering substance served up on a beautiful piece of art? Thus, LSD blotter art was born. Few drugs have become as synonymous with a psychedelic trip as LSD, which is commonly referred to as “acid.” Having made its imprint on music, art and culture worldwide, LSD was here to stay. Like many substances, LSD was born in a laboratory and made its way to the public for recreational use. Then free samples that Sandoz Pharmaceuticals distributed to the public largely grew the user base of this fascinating drug. But researchers did not uncover the ideal medical use for this psychedelic substance. Army and the CIA experimented with LSD as a truth serum for interrogation. He intended to create a blood stimulant and didn’t realize the hallucinogenic effects until 1943, when he accidentally consumed the substance while working in the lab.įor the next couple of decades, psychiatrists used LSD to study behavioral and personality changes and to treat addiction, depression, psychosomatic diseases, and other mental health conditions. Albert Hofmann synthesized lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) while working at Sandoz Pharmaceutical in Basel, Switzerland. Whether you race for speed, or ride for the obstacles, you can find a ready-to-run vehicle that’s perfect for you at RC Superstore. RTR cars that are rated at intermediate and expert level are great for experienced RC owners who just want to test different platforms without starting from scratch. They are easier to master and require almost no time to get them on the road. RTR RC vehicles are the ideal choice for beginners that want to kick-up dust and tear up the roads from day one, without the stress of false starts and delayed races. The Benefits of RTR Radio-Controlled Vehicles These RCs vehicles immediately provide exceptional performance with no assembly required.īetter still, just because they are ready-to-run doesn’t mean you can’t upgrade components for a meaner ride in the future. Radio-controlled cars and RTR RC trucks are considered “RTR” when they come “Ready-to-Run” out of the box. What is “RTR” in the RC Vehicle Community? You also won’t get pulled over by a cop for any speeding tickets, or risk road rage from other drivers. When the daily commute makes us lament traffic, RTR cars and trucks can remind us why driving is a thrill. Radio controlled cars and remote-controlled cars allow us to drive for fun, and with complete safety. That’s why you’ll find so many different, but equally outstanding, remote control cars at Tower Hobbies. We become weary of inserting the key into the ignition and trying to beat traffic on a regular basis. Ultimately, many of the characteristics that make an RC car the best choice for you might be very different from those of another hobbyist. And though it’s less suitable for running indoors, the GRANITE can easily conquer much more difficult outdoor terrain. It’s twice the size of the Deadbolt, but also twice the cost. The 1/10 scale, ready-to-run ARRMA GRANITE 4X2 Boost monster truck measures more than seventeen inches long. On the other hand, a larger RC car has more visual impact, both in its dimensions and the amount of realistic detail the size allows. The Deadbolt costs about $125, fully assembled and complete with everything you need to drive it. A smaller size also often means a smaller price. At less than eight inches long, it can even be driven indoors. You can take a compact remote control car like the 1/24 scale Axial Deadbolt rock crawler almost anywhere. The choice of size does matter, however, depending on your budget and where you want to drive. The best RC cars for beginners can be large or small. Check out the selection from ARRMA, a brand with an excellent reputation for durability. For this reason, Tower Hobbies highly recommends off-road “bashers” as some of the very best first RC cars. It’s easy to underestimate how fast RC cars move, and how quickly you must react to avoid an accident. If you’ve never driven an RC car before, you’ll almost certainly crash into something sooner or later. No RC vehicle qualifies as a best remote control car if it breaks the first time you run it! This is why you should avoid department store RC toys if you’re serious about the hobby. Perhaps the most important feature is durability. With that in mind, let’s look at what makes any RC car a good choice for the first-time RC driver. Most people who ask for the name of the best remote control car are just starting in the RC car hobby and want to choose wisely. RTR vehicles make the best RC cars for anyone who just wants to get out and have fun driving. Briefly put, RC kits are great if you love tinkering and want to understand everything about how your remote control car works. Depending on your abilities and interests, both types have their advantages and disadvantages. Tower Hobbies offers RC vehicles in kit and ready-to-run (RTR) completion levels. You can save by starting with a basic but high-quality RC car and upgrading it later as your budget allows.įinally, you need to decide if the best RC car for you is one you put together yourself or one that you can drive almost straight out of the box. RC cars are available from Tower Hobbies at a very wide range of prices. Your best remote control car should also not cost more than you can afford. If this will be your very first RC vehicle, then you’ll want it to be one that you can easily control - not a brushless powered RC race car that goes 80 mph or more. Another factor to consider when looking for your best RC car is the amount of experience you have in the radio control hobby. What full-size vehicles do you like the most? Where would you like to run your RC car? The best RC car for you will be one that matches your personal interests and needs. The first step toward finding the best radio control car for you is to narrow down your options. A better question than “Which is the best RC car?” might be, “Which is the best remote control car for me?” There are as many opinions about which is the best remote control car as there are RC cars. We rented the smallest locker for 6.00 for the day. There was plenty of lounge chairs but only because it was not crowded. There was a snack bar in the pool area and a larger food area in the main building that offered pizza, burger, fries, chicken fingers and drinks. There were 3 different slides and a wave pool for the big kids and a water play area with 2 small slides for the little ones. The length of the lazy river was ok, however the width was not large at all. If the park was crowded it might have changed their minds. Our kids enjoyed the slides because the lines were not long. The day we went was chilly so the park was not crowded. We got the tickets online for 5.00 a piece(reg 24.00). We visited the Montage Mountain Water park on June 10th. An unorganized unhelpful parking staff will steer people away from seeing the concerts and events here. They talk a lot to each other, and then they snap their fingers at you. So I get back out on the road, and am kind of disappointed in the police officers on the main road because they don't converse either. After getting no response several times, I drove on the road myself LOL.Īdd on 25 minutes to the 45 minutes. Wasn't this your job to tell people where to go? Just stood there and stared while I politely asked if I could drive on that road, two feet in front of him. So then I see a guy near the entryway to go out (as I found out by taking that road myself) dressed in Staff uniform who was standing there, I guess supposed to direct people? I pulled up right in front of him, about 2 feet away from him and I asked him if it was possible for me to exit on that road or not, and then I asked him again. He legit stands there and stares at me and doesn't say anything. So I look around and there are NO SIGNS hanging up. Those verbal directions if followed correctly just lead you to an empty lot, not the way out. So, then I finally get into the lot and was following the cars up to go farther if I am going out, I follow those verbal directions and have no idea where to go after that. 45 minutes of my time wasted, just trying to dodge the streets in order to get to work, because I was directed to go up to the pavilion (acted as if the road was blocked off that I needed to take.). Well going up to the pavilion by car took 45 minutes. So I figure no big deal, I will pull into the pavilion turn around. Going straight leads to the pavilion and nothing else, but once again no one can help the outline of the road. First, I was trying to come back from an appointment in the same town as the pavilion, and there was a lot of traffic on the roads but that's to be expected, instead of taking the turn I needed to take, I was directed to go straight. I really wanted to like this venue and was considering going to the concert here but didn't actually go. The animal-based diet caused the most structural damage to the gut lining and increased the risk of inflammatory bowel disorder ( Quercia et al., 2014 David et al., 2014).ĭigestive health is an uncommon topic in a high school introductory biology class. The animal-based diet resulted in colonization by species such as Bacteroides spp., Bilophila wadsworthia, and Alistipes spp. Those given a plant-based diet had a higher colonization rate of species such as Roseburia spp., Eubacterium rectale, and Faecalibacterium prausnitzii. In one study where 10 young adults were given either a plant- or animal-based diet for five days, there was significant change in the GMs of the participants. A transition from an omnivorous to a vegetarian diet is enough to drastically change the diversity and abundance of your microbiome ( Huitzil, 2018). Xylanibacter extracts energy from fiber well and provides protection from chronic inflammatory colonic disorders ( Walsh et al., 2014). A greater ratio of Prevotella to Bacteroides has been shown to increase weight loss in humans on a high-fiber diet ( Hjorth et al., 2019). A study of European children and African children showed that the African diet, rich in millet, sorghum, and local vegetables and lower in lipids and animal protein, selected for microbiota with high abundance of Prevotella and Xylanibacter, and low levels of Shigella and Escherichia ( De Filippo et al., 2010). Higher levels of Firmicutes, such as Ruminococcaceae, and lower levels of Bacteroidetes, such as Bacteroidaceae and Bacteroides, have been connected with obesity ( Wexler, 2007). Eating more fiber, less sugar, and less animal fat supports a diverse gut microbiome with bacterial species that help keep the lining of the small intestine functioning effectively ( Rinninella et al., 2019). Higher species richness and presence of certain species lead to better digestive health and can greatly reduce the risk of many gastrointestinal disorders, mood changes, hyperactivity in children, and obesity ( De Filippo et al., 2010). The relative abundance and richness of bacterial species in the human digestive tract is directly connected to a person’s diet, exercise, lifestyle, and use of antibiotics ( Rinninella et al., 2019). The human gut microbiome (GM) has been shown to rapidly evolve in one lifetime due to a change in diet. Educational approaches such as game play and active learning have been shown to improve student engagement, retention of concepts, and overall success of a lesson ( Sengupta and Clark, 2016 Michael, 2006). The game involves teamwork, decisions about diet, cause and effect of various life events, and data analysis. I designed a simulation that uses inquiry and game play to teach high school (grades 9–12) biology students these concepts. A diet of sugar- and fat-rich foods will cultivate less diverse bacteria and species that cause inflammation in your gut and impair memory and focus ( Quercia et al., 2014). A diet full of fresh vegetables, meat, and whole grains will cultivate a variety of bacteria that will help you absorb nutrients, prevent disease, keep your skin hydrated, and even improve cognitive function. The abundance and richness of bacterial species in your digestive tract change based on your diet and lifestyle. The human gut microbiome is an important part of the digestive system and the human body as a whole. With original music from Alex Silverman and live soundscaping by Xavier Velastin using only our cast’s voices, this show will be unlike any other and a first for the Greek Play. This year's play is a modern-day version of Oedipus at Colonus, Inspired by the story of Pinochet’s visit to the UK in 1998, this production sees Oedipus in his dying days in a hospital, surrounded by those he loves, those who have betrayed him and seeking the protection of Theseus, the hotshot King of Athens.
